http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/parasite-turns-honey-bees-zombies-212258832.htmlThought of you. Wanted to here your thoughts.
My thoughts on this are that this is just another theory that I think will go nowhere. I think the cause of CCD lies more with the use of pesticides, herbicides, and GMO crops. I did post this on beesource.com to see what the experienced beekeepers thought of it and I'll go back and see what they have to say and share some of that here. One CCD researcher made a good point about this. Some areas suffering CCD do not have this parasitic fly so it definitely is not the "cause" of CCD but still being looked at as a contributing factor. I think a lot goes into it. Just like with mites. I've been told that mites don't kill bees, they just weaken them so they are susceptible to other illnesses of which they die from. I think the same will be true for this parasitic fly. The pesticides, herbicides, GMO crops, monocultures, all have contributed to the weakening of the honeybee so that other things can move in and wipe them out :(
Here is a good article on it:http://westernfarmpress.com/management/fly-parasite-not-major-threat-honey-bees
