BACK FROM OAHU!!

January 17, 2009

As expected, we had an absolutely glorious time on the island. When we arrived it was a bit cloudy and rainy but through the rain there was sunshine and the best part... lots of warmth. I missed the 27 below zero temps we reached here in Minnesota (THANKFULLY!). Didn't manage to connect with the Oils of Aloha people but that didn't stop me from buying their wonderful products. So for those of you who have not tried their kukui nut oil I am having my first blog giveaway. I did manage to slip in a Soap Factory tour and so I will be adding one of their products to the blog giveaway, a lipbalm and wooden turtle. The lipbalm is made with both kukui and macadamia nut oils. Another great place on the island is Island Soap & Candle Works. I arrived as they were setting some of their soaps out to cure and it smelled so wonderful so I picked up the pikake scented soap with matching scented candle. For those of you who have not used pikake fragrance in your products, it is a must!

BTW/I learned a little something about Kukui while on Oahu. If you apply it before going into the sun and after being in the sun, you don't burn, at least I didn't and I'm fair skinned. My husband didn't apply it beforehand but did immediately after his upper shoulders and back burned and he said that the kukui kept his back from feeling like it was on fire and it also turned the burn to tan quite fast. Another plus... NO PEELING!

I will post the blog giveaway midweek. I still need to clear space on my digital camera for product photos and of course... I can't post the blog giveaway without first showing some pictures of my trip.

Welcome back! Sounded like such a fun trip~ and very interesting about how not to burn...

Lucky you to visit soap companies! What was your favorite?

I'm glad you enjoyed the warm weather! We've been freezing our tails off here =)

Interesting info on the oil! I'll have to give that a try this summer...I'd love to find a better alternative to commercial sun screen.

LOL @ your comment about not being able to do a giveaway until you post photos!

That's really neat about the Kukui oil; maybe you should start making/selling your own sunscreen made with that oil?

So good to have you back!

Thanks for the welcoming back ladies!

Carrie,

The best soap company visit for me was the island soap and candle company. They are always busy making the soap, cutting and curing when you walk in the door and the place smells so lovely and their staff loves to talk about the process so it is definitely worth the visit.

Heidi,

The kukui is really great for the sun. I always assumed putting on any oil before going into the sun would cause a bad burn but it seriously didn't result in anything like that. I'm a natural blond with very white skin and I used before and after and I didn't have any problems. The oil I picked up was hyped as a good alternative to other sun products so it would be interesting to know what others experience using kukui.

Teresa,

I'm going to try and create something this summer. I've used my own concoction for our family, especially my girls, but they are true testers since they are naturally dark and don't tend to burn anyway. I've enlisted a few pale skinned people to test out this summer an oil I hope to master. LOL! If you are interested in testing, let me know, I'll send some your way too :)

Oops, I meant they ARENT true testers. Can't seem to type like a speak. LOL!

Aloha Michelle, Sorry to have missed you on the North Shore. I noticed that you have a link to From Nature with Love. They carry our kukui oil and macadamia oil. Jay is wonderful to work with and he is a big supporter of soapmaker gatherings. We have a log cabin at the volcano on the Big Island. It's an arts and crafts community. Maybe next time you're in Hawaii we can have you come teach a soapmaking class. We'll supply the kits.

Jojo, I would absolutely love to visit and teach a class! Sorry I missed you. I didn't realize FNWL sold your oils, that is wonderful! I was just talking to someone about macadamia nut oil this afternoon - Your products are really great!
